Partial Taffeta

The leech of overlapping genoas gets beat up every time the boat tacks as that part of the sail gets dragged across the shrouds and the front of the mast. Racing sails get especially abraided since eager crew members work hard to pull the genoa around fast, which pulls the sail across the rig under higher loads. To protect the sail, UK Sailmakers can adhere a thin layer of woven polyester (taffeta) or LiteSkin® onto one or both sides of the sail’s leech. On X-Drive sails, the taffeta can be put over the tapes to prevent tapes from getting damaged.

Shown above is an example of taffeta applied to the leech and foot of a genoa as well as the leech of the mainsail.
