UK Sailmakers Cruising

CRUISING GENOAS

Cruising Genoa: Hybrid Woven

High-tenacity polyester reinforced with UHMWPE fibers like Dyneema® — laminate-grade shape retention with the durability and easy handling of a woven sail. Built for offshore passages, bluewater cruising, and serious miles.

Why Choose Hybrid Woven for Genoas and Jibs?

Standard Dacron is excellent for coastal cruising headsails, but for bluewater passage making and the sustained, high-load demands placed on genoas and jibs, polyester fibers will eventually stretch. Our Hybrid Woven headsail range — including Voyager, Hydranet, and Fibercon Pro Hybrid — replaces or reinforces those polyester yarns with UHMWPE, one of the world’s strongest and lightest fibers, delivering superior shape retention, durability, and driving efficiency over the long term.

Engineered for the Long Haul

Laminate performance, woven ruggedness

You get the shape-holding characteristics of a high-tech laminate with the chafe resistance and easy handling of a woven cloth.

Mildew Resistant & Breathable

Woven materials

Unlike film-based laminates, these woven materials breathe — making them ideal for performance cruisers in damp or tropical climates.

Easier Repairs

In-loft or offshore

If the unthinkable happens mid-passage, these sails can be repaired by any loft or on-deck with a standard sewing machine.

Three Paths to Performance

Depending on your boat’s size, your rig configuration, and your sailing goals, we utilize three world-class materials to build your Hybrid Woven headsail. Each is engineered to bridge the gap between traditional woven durability and high-performance shape retention.

Voyager hybrid woven cross-cut sail

VOYAGER

The Cross-Cut Specialist. Manufactured in Ireland by Nautosphere — on the legendary looms that once produced the world’s most famous heavy-duty cloths — Voyager is a fill-oriented hybrid designed for efficiency and extreme longevity.

  • Technology: A patented “Cold-Setting” process chemically shrinks the cloth far beyond conventional heat-setting, creating ultra-high fiber density where the cloth relies on the mechanical weave rather than brittle resins for stability.
  • Best For: Offshore and performance cruisers looking for maximum value and reliability in a cross-cut layout. Ideal for yachts up to 60ft.
  • Key Advantage: Because it’s resin-independent, the finish won’t “crack” or break down over time. Stays flexible, easy to flake, and holds shape for tens of thousands of miles — backed by a 6-year/25,000-mile shape guarantee.
  • Customization: Color options in Grey or Black available across most material weights; consult your loft for current stock.

HYDRA NET®

The Radial Standard. Produced in Germany by Dimension-Polyant, Hydra Net® is arguably the most famous name in offshore sailing — a tightly woven high-tenacity polyester featuring a supporting grid of Dyneema®.

  • Technology: Woven only on high-performance looms engineered for the extreme tension Dyneema® requires. A stabilizing ripstop “net” of Ultra-PE (UHMWPE) lets us design radial headsails with the performance of a laminate but the breathability and soft hand of a woven.
  • Best For: Larger cruising monohulls, multihulls, and high-aspect rigs that need a tri-radial layout to handle extreme, multi-directional loads.
  • Key Advantage: Exceptional tear strength and bias stability — the “Endurance King” for sailors who want a white, traditional-looking sail that performs like a racing membrane.
  • Customization: Now available in “Onyx” (Black) for a modern, high-performance look without compromising function.

Fibercon Pro Hybrid woven headsail

FIBERCON® PRO HYBRID

High-Density Performance. From Contender Sailcloth, Fibercon® Pro Hybrid is a premier woven engineered specifically for the concentrated loads of modern radial sails.

  • Technology: Balances fiber denier, count, and crimp into a high-modulus weave, impregnated and stabilized with a unique solvent-based PU coating. Standard polyester yarns are replaced with Dyneema® yarns of four times the breaking load, making the fabric virtually impossible to tear.
  • Best For: Serious cruisers and performance voyagers who want a stable, high-performance alternative to laminates, especially on boats up to 65ft.
  • Key Advantage: Incredible diagonal stability. When a genoa is partially furled for long periods, the cloth resists the high-stress loads at the luff and leech, so the sail resumes its original profile when it’s unrolled.
  • Customization: Available in a range of weights and finishes, including Grey for a sleek, professional aesthetic.

FAQs

How much longer will these sails last compared to standard Dacron?

A standard Dacron headsail can stay structurally sound for years, but its performance life — the window in which it holds its efficient, aerodynamic shape — is much shorter. Because Hybrid Wovens resist the permanent “creep” that plagues polyester, they significantly extend performance life over traditional woven sails.

Are they heavier than standard sails?

It depends what you’re comparing them to. Because UHMWPE fibers are much stronger and lighter than polyester, we can often use a lighter base cloth to beat the strength of “heavy-duty” offshore Dacron — reducing weight in the sail, which helps the boat sail better in light air. Compared to a standard coastal Dacron genoa, though, a hybrid woven — especially with rugged offshore finishing — will be a bit heavier and bulkier.

Are these headsails harder to handle or furl?

They keep a soft hand because they’re woven, but the high-density weave makes them slightly stiffer than standard Dacron. On a furling genoa that’s rarely an issue — they roll smoothly; just expect a heavier hybrid to add a little to the furled diameter. A foam luff helps the sail keep good shape when it’s partially furled.

Can I get them in colors other than white?

Hybrid Wovens are primarily produced in white for the highest UV resistance and material integrity over long-term offshore use. As textile technology evolves, select weights are becoming available in Grey or Black to meet the demand for a more modern aesthetic.
