Last summer, when they couldn’t get the rental house they wanted as a COVID escape, NY Sailor Perry Burgess and her husband bought a pre-owned Catalina 36 MKII. UK Sailmakers’ Adam Loory, a fellow yacht club member, agreed to take out Perry for refresher lessons. However, before the first session, Perry ripped her main from luff to leech. It was a near-catastrophic rip, but UK was able to fix the sail that week to get Perry through the season. It was clear, however, that the sail was shot.
After two sessions Perry felt comfortable enough dock the boat and set the cruising spinnaker singlehandedly. Luckily for Perry she was also able to get help from a fellow club member who also has a Catalina 36 MkII. The two talked about common repair issues, ways to run rigging, etc. It turned out they both need to buy new mainsails over the winter and they chose different sailmakers. “She paid less for her main but, she didn’t get the same service I got from UK Sailmakers. Her sailmaker simply dropped off her sail. She had to rig the sail herself only to discover that the luff slides didn’t fit. She then had to return the sail herself.”
Perry continued. “My sail purchasing experiences couldn’t have been more different. Last week, Adam personally delivered my new main and Lazy Cradle. Then we installed them together so I could learn from the experience with Adam clearly and precisely explaining how everything went together and, particularly, how to use the Lazy Cradle. Everything worked, everything fit, and everything is now clearly understood. Even with my mask on, my eyes and hand gestures clearly shouted that I was a happy camper!”
One final comment from Perry was that, due to his busy schedule, her husband is not able to help as much with the maintenance of the boat as he would like. “That’s not a problem,” exclaimed Perry, “I have Adam and UK Sailmakers standing behind me if I need any help.”
