Now in its seventh year, the Baltic 500 doublehanded race has grown into the premier offshore doublehanded race in Northern Europe, and the 2026 edition did nothing to weaken that reputation. Starting from Kiel on May 13th, 50 boats tackled the longest course option: approximately 540 nautical miles counterclockwise around the Danish islands, past Copenhagen, around Anholt, north of Læsø, and back through the Great Belt.
The conditions were unforgiving from the start. Cold temperatures, gusty winds, and a brutal weather split at the Fehmarn Belt in the opening hours divided the fleet decisively, leaving only nine boats in a favourable pressure shift while the rest sat parked in a wind hole for two to three hours. The first 250 miles offered mostly reaching conditions in winds ranging from 5 to 30 knots; the return leg from Læsø was a sustained upwind grind, with everything from near-calm to storm force in the rain showers. Crossing multiple Traffic Separation Schemes, navigating shallow passages, and threading commercial shipping lanes kept both watch schedules full.

ORC Class 1: Hinden Takes the Title
Line honours in ORC Class 1 went to Red, a J/V 43 sailed by Mathias Müller von Blumencron racing with famed American sailor Cole Brauer, edging out the second J/V 43 Vineta in a close battle to the finish. The bigger Solaris 50 and Shogun 50 were both forced to retire. On corrected time, it was Hinden, a JPK 10.50, that took ORC Class 1 and the overall ORC title, holding off the Pogo RC Mariejo in a tight fight to the line. Once again, the JPK 10.50 proved why it is the benchmark in offshore performance racing.
A standout performance came from PURE 49 GORRE, a locally-built aluminium offshore performance cruiser from a Kiel boatyard, raced by PURE Yachts’ Matthias and Urs. They crossed the line third overall, ahead of the second J/V 43 on elapsed time, and did it on a full suit of offshore-ready UK Sailmakers X-Drive Carbon upwind sails, Matrix asymmetrical spinnakers, and a Code Zero.
ORC Class 2: The ISL Titanium Jib Proves Its Versatility
Class 2 featured a competitive mix of JPK 10.30s, JPK 10.10s, one-offs, a MAT 1010, and a pair of Archambault A35s. One of those A35s, OM, was campaigned by UK Sailmakers Germany‘s owner, Stefan Voss, paired with German offshore legend Tim Kröger. The duo showed impressive boat speed in both directions all the way around the course, finishing approximately an hour ahead of the MAT 1010 Matchbox on elapsed time. On corrected time, Matchbox took class honours with OM a close second.
The story worth telling here is the sails. Tim and Stefan ran a full suit of UK Titanium sails and Matrix asymmetrical spinnakers, and notably used a single headsail through all conditions. Their new ISL Titanium jib handled everything the Baltic threw at it across the full wind range without compromising performance at either end. As Tim put it after the race, the ISL is a gamechanger for offshore crews who need a wide-range headsail without giving anything away on the racecourse.

Dehler 30 OD and Yardstick
The Dehler 30 one-design class was won by Powerplay, sailed by Oliver Schmidt-Rybandt and Clara Witthinrich, with Play Harder (Luca Mayer and Luca Leidholdt) in second. The Yardstick class went to Mona Lisa, followed by Blue Chip.
Off the Water and Onwards to 2027
Organisation was handled by Rasmus Töpsch and Cord Hall of Yachtclub Strande, both experienced doublehanders themselves, and the private-club atmosphere was a consistent highlight. Pre-race barbecue, around-the-clock chili and beer at the finish dock, and a proper prize-giving with food and drinks. Fleets came from Germany, Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. After such a great event both on and off the water, the 50-boat entry limit will almost certainly sell out the moment entries open for 2027.
