The Oldest Loft in Our Network Has Just Joined It
UK Sailmakers is proud to welcome Penrose Sailmakers of Falmouth, Cornwall to our global network of lofts as UK Sailmakers GBR Southwest. In joining the network, owner and Managing Director Gavin Watson brings with him one of the most storied sail lofts in the world, a business established in 1825 that has been trading continuously for over 200 years from the same Cornish harbour.
You can read more about the remarkable story behind Penrose Sailmakers in this 2025 article on Penrose’s 200-year history.
Where History Meets High Performance
Falmouth is no ordinary sailing destination. Situated on the third deepest natural harbour in the world, it is widely regarded as one of the premier regatta venues in Europe, regularly hosting National, European and World Championships, and serving as the start and finish of major offshore and round-the-world races. Penrose Sailmakers has been at the centre of that sailing life for two centuries, originally established to service the sailing ships that called into Falmouth, and today just as firmly rooted on the quayside it has always occupied.
The loft operates at full production capacity, with a recently installed Blackman & White CNC machine alongside advanced sail design programs, enabling the team to design, cut and build sails from inception to installation. It is a fitting combination: a loft that learned sail construction through techniques passed down over generations, now running some of the most current production technology available. Full service and repair capabilities cover everything from dinghy to superyacht sails, with emergency and overnight repair services available to regatta entrants during events such as Falmouth Week. Beyond sailmaking, the loft offers a complete range of covers, canopies, awnings and upholstery for yachts of all sizes.
Penrose’s longstanding partnerships with Rustler Yachts, as OEM sailmaker since 2009, and with Pendennis Shipyard, one of the world’s leading superyacht refit facilities, reflect the loft’s ability to deliver to the highest standards across a wide range of projects. The loft has evolved steadily over the years to accommodate bigger and more complex work, and continues to do so.
As UK Sailmakers GBR Southwest, the loft now offers access to the full UK Sailmakers product lineup, from cruising Dacron to laminates and performance X-Drive® and Titanium sails, Code Zeros and Matrix Spinnakers, all backed by the design tools and global resources of the UK Sailmakers network. It is a combination of local expertise and global innovation that sailors in the southwest of England and beyond will benefit from directly.

Introducing The Falmouth Team
The people behind UK Sailmakers GBR Southwest are as much a part of the story as the loft itself.
Gavin Watson has spent his entire career at Penrose, arriving as an apprentice in 1996 straight from the Marine Business course he had undertaken at Falmouth Marine School, drawn to a career in the marine industry from the start. He was initially taught sail and cover construction using traditional methods passed down over generations, and in 2008 became instrumental in bringing CAD design to the loft, making the transition from traditional craft to modern sail design without losing the grounding that makes the difference. He became Assistant Director in 2009 and purchased the company outright in 2021. The most recent chapter has seen 3D scanning and CNC cutting technology added to the loft’s capabilities, continuing a pattern of knowing when and how to move the business forward.
On the water, Gavin is an accomplished racer who learned as a junior on the River Fal, racing with his family on their 33-foot yacht and competing in the local Mirror Dinghy class. That foundation grew into a competitive record that includes seven national championship titles across three classes, two podium finishes at J24 European Championships, and a top-ten result at the J24 World Championships. In local waters he has won the Falmouth Sunbeam Championships, the Working Boat Championships and the Ajax National Championship. It is a racing career that feeds directly into the sails and setups he designs for clients, and into the loft’s strong record across competitive fleets. Under his leadership, Penrose continues to offer apprenticeships through local colleges while attracting experienced staff from further afield, all drawn to a loft with deep roots and a reputation that speaks for itself.
Head Sailmaker George Cousins brings 10 years of sailmaking experience combining modern sail design and materials with a solid understanding of traditional techniques. George works across floor cutting, lofting, recuts and CNC cutting, bringing both hands-on skill and technical knowledge of contemporary sailcloth and construction methods to each project. His competitive background includes two national championship titles in one-design dinghy racing and a bronze medal at a World Championship, and his experience as a sailing coach across the southwest gives him an additional perspective when working with owners on what their sails need to do, whether for racing or cruising. A degree in Surveying underpins an analytical approach that shows in the precision of his work.
Head Cover Maker Mark Waters joined Penrose in 1983, likely making him one of the longest-serving members of any sail loft team anywhere. Over four decades he has led his team through successive generations of change in materials, technology and technique, from deep expertise in traditional hand seaming and rope work through to the complex canvas projects the loft now undertakes for superyachts and new-build Rustler Yachts. For many of his years at Penrose, Mark also served as a volunteer lifeboatman when the loft was located closer to the harbour, a detail that says something about both the man and the community the loft is part of. He can still be found on the loft floor working through a problem that modern technology alone cannot solve, and that combination of accumulated knowledge and practical instinct is exactly what a loft like this is built on.

Strength Across Britain and Ireland
The addition of UK Sailmakers GBR Southwest strengthens what is already a growing presence across the region. Sailors in Ireland are well served by Barry Hayes at UK Sailmakers Ireland, and the network also includes representatives covering Northern England, Scotland and Wales. From Falmouth to Cork and beyond, UK Sailmakers is building the depth of coverage that sailors across Britain and Ireland deserve, with experienced, locally rooted lofts able to deliver the full UK Sailmakers product range and the backing of a global network.
The southwest of England has a sailing culture and a racing calendar that demands a loft of genuine quality. We are confident that in Gavin Watson and the team at UK Sailmakers GBR Southwest, sailors in the region have exactly that. We are delighted to have them with us, and we look forward to what we will build together.
