Nautical Mile: The Distance That Matches the Chart

A nautical mile is the unit of distance used at sea and in the air: 1,852 metres exactly, which is 6,076.1 feet or about 1.15 statute miles. It is the length of one minute of latitude, and that is the whole point of it. Because the latitude scale on a chart is divided into minutes, the navigator measures distance directly from the side of the chart with dividers and never needs a separate scale. A beginner should remember that a knot is one nautical mile per hour and the two are inseparable. An experienced navigator adds that a minute of latitude is not perfectly constant, because the Earth is slightly flattened at the poles, varying from roughly 1,843 metres at the equator to about 1,862 metres at the poles, which is why the international definition settled on a fixed compromise figure.

Where the Number Comes From

The Earth’s circumference is close to 40,000 kilometres. Divide that circle into 360 degrees and each degree into 60 minutes and you get 21,600 minutes of arc, each about 1,852 metres long. Once accurate latitude observations became routine, defining a mile as a minute of arc made the sextant, the chart and the log speak the same language.

The precise figure varied by nation for a long time. The British Admiralty mile was 6,080 feet and the United States used 6,080.2 feet until the 1950s. The International Hydrographic Conference of 1929 fixed the nautical mile at 1,852 metres, and that value is now universal. The old 6,080-foot figure lingers in older sailors’ memories, but the difference is a few feet in a mile and of no consequence on a small boat.

Nautical Miles, Knots and Speed

Because the knot is one nautical mile per hour, speed and distance arithmetic at sea is refreshingly simple. A boat making 6 knots covers a mile in 10 minutes and a tenth of a mile in one minute. The six-minute rule follows directly: in six minutes you travel your speed in knots divided by ten, so at 7.5 knots you cover 0.75 of a mile. Navigators use this constantly for dead-reckoning updates and for judging when a buoy should appear.

Tidal streams are also given in knots, so a 2-knot stream running with you for three hours has carried you 6 miles farther than the log shows. That is why a sailor with a passage plan thinks in nautical miles and hours rather than kilometres: every quantity converts without a calculator.

Measuring Distance on the Chart

Always take distance from the latitude scale on the left or right edge of the chart, at the same latitude as the area you are measuring, never from the longitude scale along the top and bottom. Minutes of longitude shrink towards the poles as the meridians converge, so at 50 degrees north a minute of longitude is only about two thirds of a mile. On a Mercator chart the latitude scale itself stretches as you go north or south, which is why you measure at the latitude you are working in.

A cable is one tenth of a nautical mile, roughly 185 metres or 200 yards, and pilot books still use it for close-quarters distances: a hazard ‘two cables east of the beacon’ is a precise instruction. Plotters do the arithmetic for you, but stepping distances off with dividers keeps you honest about how far you have really gone.

Cruising and Racing Perspectives

The cruising skipper plans in miles per day. A displacement yacht averaging 5 knots covers 120 miles in 24 hours, and that single number underlies most passage planning, from making a tidal gate to how much water to carry on an ocean crossing. The racing navigator lives in fractions of a mile: distance to the layline, gain from a shift and time to the next mark are all computed in nautical miles and knots of boat speed and current. On a short course the arithmetic is done in boat lengths and seconds, but the tactician who can convert 0.3 of a mile at 6.5 knots into about three minutes in his head has an edge.

Why not just use kilometres at sea?

The nautical mile is seagoing convention that turns out to be pure practicality. Once you think in miles and knots, the chart, the log, the tide tables and the sextant all agree with each other, and the navigation becomes simple enough to do in your head on a wet night when it matters most.
