Reacher: The High-Clewed Headsail for Fast, Windy Reaching

High-clewed genoa for heavy wind reaching, also called “blast reacher”

A reacher is a high-clewed, relatively flat headsail built for reaching in a fresh to strong breeze – the sail you set when the apparent wind is forward of the beam but too far aft, or too strong, for the genoa to do its best work, and too far forward for a spinnaker to stand. It is often called a “blast reacher” or a “jib top”. To a beginner it looks like a genoa with the clew cut oddly high; to a sailmaker that high clew is the whole point, because it lets the sheet lead well aft and outboard so leech and foot tension stay in proportion when the boat is tearing along with the wind on the shoulder.

What Makes a Reacher Different from a Genoa

A working genoa is designed to sheet close to the centreline with the clew low, so the foot closes off against the deck and the sail behaves like a wing joined to the boat. Sheet that same genoa outboard for a reach and the geometry falls apart: the lead is too far forward, the top twists open and spills, and the foot hooks in. A reacher is drawn from the outset for the reaching lead. Its clew sits roughly at the height of the boom or higher, its luff usually runs the full hoist, and its LP is typically in the range of 85 to 110 per cent of J – smaller than a heavy genoa because it is meant for real wind.

Why the High Clew Matters

On a reach the sheet has to go to the rail, often to a block on the quarter or even to the end of the boom. With a low clew that lead would open the top of the sail dramatically while the foot stayed tight. Raising the clew moves the sheet angle so that it bisects the clew, keeping leech and foot tension balanced and letting the sail twist off gently and evenly from foot to head. That balanced twist is what makes a reacher stable in gusts: the top depowers before the whole sail collapses or the boat is knocked flat.

When to Set a Reacher

The classic slot is an apparent wind angle of about 50 to 90 degrees in 18 to 35 knots. Below that wind speed a genoa or code zero will be faster; above it you are probably reaching under a small jib and reefed main anyway. Offshore racers love the sail on long reaching legs where a spinnaker would be a broach waiting to happen, and where a genoa staysail set under the reacher adds useful area in the slot. Delivery crews like it for the same reason a cruiser does: it drives the boat hard without asking anyone to go forward and wrestle a kite.

Cruising Versus Racing Perspective

A racing inventory often carries a dedicated jib top or blast reacher in the headsail count, cut to the rating rule’s headsail limits so it measures as a jib rather than a spinnaker. Racers trim it actively, easing in the puffs and playing the staysail sheet, and change to it and from it as the wind builds or the course bends. Cruisers seldom carry a sail by that name, though a cutter’s high-clewed Yankee and the modern cruising code zero do much the same job with less fuss.

Trim Tips and Common Mistakes

Lead the sheet aft and outboard – a snatch block on the toe rail or the spinnaker sheet block – and adjust until the sail luffs evenly from top to bottom when you ease it. Keep plenty of halyard tension to hold the draft forward; a reacher with the draft blown aft will heel the boat and load the helm. Do not overtrim: a reacher wants to breathe, and pinning it in stalls the slot and kills speed. If you set a staysail beneath it, tack it far enough forward and sheet it inboard of the reacher so both sails have clean air.

Is a reacher the same as a code zero?

No. A code zero is a large, light, free-flying reaching sail for light to moderate air that rates as a spinnaker. A reacher is a heavier, flatter, hanked or furled headsail for strong reaching conditions and rates as a jib.

Do I need a special sheet lead for a reacher?

Almost always. The clew is high and the sail wants to sheet well aft and outboard, so plan on a rail block or the spinnaker sheet block rather than the genoa track.

What cloth should a reacher be built from?

For cruising, a firm heavy woven polyester is durable and forgiving. For racing, a laminate or load-path construction with aramid or carbon fibres holds the flat shape at high loads and keeps the leech from stretching open.

A reacher is one of those sails that earns its locker space in a single windy passage. Set it when the kite is too much and the genoa too little, lead the sheet where the high clew asks you to, and you will reach faster, drier and more comfortably than either of the alternatives.
