A stanchion is a vertical post fixed to the deck edge that supports the lifelines running around the boat. Together with the pulpit at the bow and the pushpit at the stern, stanchions and lifelines form the fence that stops a crew member sliding overboard. A beginner sees a stanchion as the stainless steel tube to grab when the boat lurches; an experienced sailor knows it is also the weakest point in that fence, designed to carry the lifeline load along its length but easily bent by a sideways shove, a dock, or a genoa sheet snagged around its top.
Anatomy of a stanchion

- Base: the fitting bolted to the deck, either a socket the tube drops into or a welded foot. The base is where the load concentrates, and it must be through-bolted with a substantial backing plate below deck.

Why stanchions matter for safety
The offshore regulations most racing and cruising sailors follow set minimum lifeline heights, maximum spacing between stanchions, and the requirement for two lifelines on boats over about 8.5 metres. They are not arbitrary. A lifeline at knee height is a trip wire that tips a person overboard, whereas one at mid-thigh gives something to fall against. Stanchions spaced too far apart let the lifeline deflect so far under load that it no longer contains anyone. Stanchions are handholds, but they are best used as a brace rather than a grip to haul against. Stanchions and sail handling
From a sailmaker’s point of view, stanchions are where headsails get hurt. A stanchion that has been bent should be replaced rather than straightened, because bending stainless steel back hardens and cracks it. Keep the tube ends and lifeline holes smooth, and re-tension lifelines so the stanchions stand plumb rather than being dragged inboard by an over-tight wire.
