Tape-Drive® is UK Sailmakers’ load-path sail construction, in which continuous high-modulus fibre tapes are laid along the computed load lines of a sail and bonded to a lightweight base laminate. The base skin holds the aerodynamic shape; the tapes carry the loads that would otherwise stretch that skin out of shape. To a beginner it is the sail with the distinctive fan of dark stripes radiating from the corners. To a seasoned sailor it was the construction that broke the link between how strong a sail had to be and how heavy it had to be, and it is the direct ancestor of UK Sailmakers’ Titanium™ and X-Drive® sails today.
How Tape-Drive® works
Every sail has a load map. Tension runs from head, tack and clew towards one another, curves along the leech and luff, and fans out across the body of the sail. In a conventional panelled sail, the sailmaker chooses cloth weights and panel orientations to keep the strongest thread line close to those loads, but woven cloth always ends up carrying some load on the bias, where it is weakest. The result is stretch, and stretch means the draft moves aft and the leech opens as the wind builds.
Tape-Drive® approaches the problem from the other direction. A computer model of the sail predicts where the loads will run at the designed range of wind speeds. The sail is then built in two layers of function. First comes the base, a laminate of polyester film and a light scrim or woven layer, cut into panels and seamed to build the three-dimensional shape. Then tapes of unidirectional fibre – originally Kevlar aramid, later carbon and aramid blends – are laid on top of the base along the mapped load lines and bonded and stitched in place. Because the fibre runs exactly along the load, almost none of it is wasted, and the base laminate can be far lighter than it would have to be if it carried the load alone.
Why it was developed
In the 1980s sailmakers were wrestling with the limits of woven Dacron. Film laminates had arrived and were much more stretch-resistant, but they still relied on panels cut from a roll, so the fibre orientation was set by the cloth manufacturer rather than by the loads on the finished sail. UK Sailmakers’ answer, introduced in the late 1980s and refined through the 1990s, was to separate the shape-holding skin from the load-carrying structure entirely. The immediate benefits were lower weight for a given strength and a sail whose shape stayed put through a wider wind range.
What it means for sail shape and speed
A sail that does not stretch keeps its designed draft position and depth as the breeze builds. In practice that shows up as a boat that points as well at the top of a sail’s range as at the bottom, a leech that stays firm without hooking, and far fewer of the mid-life shape problems that woven sails develop. Every kilogram saved is weight removed from high on the rig, which reduces heel and pitching.
Cruising and racing use
Tape-Drive® made its name on race courses, but a large share of the sails built with it went onto cruising boats. For a cruiser, the appeal is a headsail or mainsail that keeps its shape year after year and stays light enough to handle, while the taped structure shrugs off the point loads of reefing and furling. UK Sailmakers built Tape-Drive® cruising sails with more robust base laminates and heavier UV protection than the racing versions, trading a little weight for longevity.
For racers, the construction offered most of the performance of a fully moulded membrane sail at a fraction of the cost, with the practical advantage that the sail could be built and repaired in the local loft. That same philosophy carried forward into Titanium™ and X-Drive®, which lay the fibre tapes more densely and with finer control, but rest on the same principle of putting fibre where the load goes. Whichever generation you sail with, the care is the same: flake loosely, avoid hard creases across the tapes, minimise flogging, and inspect the tape ends near the corners for lifting.

How does Tape-Drive® differ from a moulded membrane sail?
A membrane sail is built in one piece on a three-dimensional mould with the fibres laid into the laminate itself. Tape-Drive® bonds the load-carrying tapes onto a panelled base, so it can be built flat in a conventional loft and individual panels or tapes can be replaced.
