SAIL TECHNOLOGY

X-Drive®: continuous fibers, corner to corner.

The load-path construction we developed to bring membrane-sail performance to working sailors — racers and cruisers alike.

WHAT MAKES X-DRIVE DIFFERENT

The yarns absorb the load — not the seams.

STEP 1

A shaped base sail

Lightweight cross-cut panels, joined with broad seaming, achieve the exact 3-D shape the designer drew — just like a traditionally built sail, but far lighter than the cloth alone could ever be trusted to stay.

STEP 2

A bonded load-path array

Narrow, high-strength, low-stretch fiber tapes are bonded along the sail's primary load paths, running continuously from corner to corner. The fibers take the aerodynamic loads — not the seams, not the base cloth.

No seam creep

Seams aren't load-bearing, so they don't slowly stretch the sail out of shape.

No catastrophic seam failure

The fiber network carries on even if a seam is damaged offshore.

Designed shape, kept longer

Outlasts the shape life of cross-cut Dacron or plain laminate sails.

THREE FIBERS, ONE SYSTEM

Pick your fiber.

X-Drive Carbon

The strongest, least-stretchy fiber in sailmaking, applied in up to 11 passes per load path. Black fibers — striking on white, sleek on black or grey.

BEST FOR

Racing mains & genoas · maximum shape retention, minimum weight

X-Drive Endure

Endumax® UHMWPE delivers near-carbon performance with the toughness of Spectra and Dyneema. White fibers — classic white-on-white, or bold contrast on dark cloth.

BEST FOR

Performance cruising & offshore · shape-holding plus durability

X-Drive Silver

S-Glass fiber — a budget-friendly white option with a touch more stretch than carbon, and still a clear step up from any woven sail.

BEST FOR

Club racing & coastal cruising on a budget

Every X-Drive sail is customized: taffeta on one or both sides, Lite Skin, recycled and partially-recycled base materials, and UK Sailmakers' Integrated Structural Luff (ISL) as an upgrade on new headsails.

In depth

Transform your sailing experience and improve your boat’s performance with X-Drive® sails, the innovative construction method that revolutionised the sailing industry. Developed by UK Sailmakers, X-Drive technology delivers superior performance, exceptional durability, and outstanding value for both racers and cruisers.

What Makes X-Drive Different?

X-Drive represents a breakthrough in sail construction, combining the best aspects of traditional paneled sails with cutting-edge membrane technology and loadpath reinforcement. As the diagram shows, X-Drive is a two-part construction system. The base sail layer is made from lightweight cross-cut panels of material that, when put together with broad seaming, achieve the 3-D shape envisioned by the sail designer as a traditionally manufactured sail would. The sail then is reinforced with narrow, high-strength, low-stretch fibers that are bonded to the sail along it's primary loadpaths. These fiber arrays run continuously and unbroken from corner to corner compared to a standard string sail with their structural fibers are only as long as the individual sail panel is wide.

By applying these continuous, load bearing yarns from corner-to-corner, it is the yarns that absorb the sail’s aerodynamic loads, not the seams or the base material. This means there is no seam creep, catastrophic seam failure is prevented, and the sail that holds its original designed shape longer than a traditional cross-cut Dacron or laminate sail.

The X-Drive Advantage

  • Superior Load Management: Our unique X-pattern tape configuration distributes loads evenly across the entire sail, preventing distortion and maintaining optimal shape in all conditions.
  • Exceptional Durability: The dense network of reinforcing fibers ensures your sail maintains its designed shape longer than traditional sails, making X-Drive sails a smart long-term investment.
  • Cost-Effective Performance: Experience the benefits of advanced membrane sail technology at a more accessible price point with price-performing X-Drive sails.

Perfect for Every Sailing Style

Whether you're a competitive racer or passionate cruiser, there's an X-Drive sail perfect for your needs:

Racing Excellence

Optimize your racing performance with X-Drive Carbon sails, featuring our most advanced fiber options for maximum stability and minimum weight. Enjoy the performance of our loadpath sail technology at an affordable price. Discover X-Drive Carbon Mainsails →

Performance Cruising

There is no reason racers should be the only ones getting well designed, fast, and durable X-Drive sails. Protect your X-Drive sails by ordering your new X-Drive sail with a layer of taffeta on one side or both. The taffeta layer (across the entire sail or solely in key areas of wear and abrasion) will extend the peak performance life of your sail, and is particularly recommended for standing-up to the demanding needs of blue water cruising. Club Racing

Step up your game with sails that deliver professional-grade performance without breaking the bank. If you’re serious about your local racing, but don’t want to invest in grand prix sails such as UK Sailmaker’s Titanium sails, X-Drive sails are the answer. These price-performing sails have proven winners in terms of speed, shape holding, and durability. All in all, X-Drive sails represent an exceptional value for club racers.

Customization Options

Every X-Drive sail is tailored to your specific requirements, whether you are buying a mainsail, genoa or jib:

  • Wide variety of base materials to suit every budget and sailing style
  • Various taffeta options for enhanced durability
  • Recycled and partially recycled base material options available
  • UK Sailmakers’ Integrated Structural Luff (ISL) technology can be added as an upgrade on new X-Drive headsails

Fiber Options

  • Carbon Fiber: The strongest and least stretchy fiber in sailmaking. Carbon load path yarns are applied in passes of up to 11 along the sail’s computer-designed load paths for maximum strength and shape retention. Black fibers are striking against a white base material or sleek and modern on black or grey materials. Learn more about X-Drive Carbon Headsails →
  • Endumax (UHMWPE) – Delivers near-carbon performance with the added benefits of Spectra and Dyneema. Endumax fibers run continuously in all directions, locking in sail shape while maintaining durability. White color allows for a white-on-white classic appearance, or bold contrast on black or grey materials. View X-Drive Endure Headsails →
  • Glass Fiber (S-Glass) – X-Drive Silver is a more budget-friendly white fiber option. Glass fiber load path yarns have more stretch than carbon but still provide strong performance. See X-Drive Silver Headsails →
