J: The Base of the Foretriangle

Measurement of foretriangle base – distance between mast and forestay

J is the rating-rule measurement of the foretriangle base: the horizontal distance from the forward face of the mast to the point where the headstay meets the deck or sheer line. With I, the foretriangle height, it defines the triangle in which the headsails are set, and it is the yardstick against which headsail overlap and spinnaker pole length are measured. The beginner needs to know that J is the fore-and-aft length of the foretriangle. The experienced sailor adds that J is measured to the headstay pin projected to the sheer line, not to the stemhead fitting or the pulpit, and that on a boat with a bowsprit or a prod the rule may define a separate measurement for sails tacked forward of the stem.

How J Is Measured

The measurer takes the forward face of the mast at the sheer line or deck as the aft point, and the intersection of the headstay’s centreline with the sheer line as the forward point, then measures horizontally between them. On a boat where the headstay comes down to a chainplate at the stem, that is straightforward. Where the stay lands on a fitting standing proud of the deck, or on a furler drum mounted on a link plate, the stay is projected down to sheer level before the distance is taken. Different rules use slightly different words, and IRC in particular relies on owner declaration, but the intent is the same everywhere: the geometric base of the triangle, independent of hardware.

J and Headsail Overlap

Headsail size is described by LP, the luff perpendicular, as a percentage of J. A 100 per cent jib has a clew that just reaches the mast; a 135 per cent genoa overlaps the mast by a third of J; a 150 per cent genoa by half. Because the percentage is fixed by J, two boats with the same LP percentage but different J values carry very different sails, and a sailmaker designing a genoa is working within the box that J and I create. A long J with a masthead rig gives big, powerful overlapping genoas that drive a heavy boat well but need big winches and a good crew to tack. A short J on a modern fractional rig gives small, non-overlapping jibs that tack in a moment, with the mainsail providing most of the power.

Overlap also matters for the slot between headsail and mainsail. A large overlap must be sheeted well aft and carefully matched to the main’s twist, or the leech backwinds the mainsail. With a non-overlapping jib on a short J, the sheeting angle moves inboard, inhaulers come into play and the whole rig behaves more like a single wing. The sailmaker’s choice of cloth follows: big overlapping cruising genoas in woven polyester or cruising laminate, tight non-overlapping racing jibs in high-modulus laminates such as Titanium and X-Drive that hold a fine entry under headstay load.

J and the Spinnaker Pole

Traditionally the spinnaker pole was cut to J, and the symmetric spinnaker’s foot was designed around a pole of that length squared to the wind. Rating rules measure the pole as SPL and penalise any excess over J, so most boats stay at or very near it. The pole length sets how far the spinnaker’s tack can be projected to windward, which in turn governs the sail’s maximum girth and how deep the boat can run efficiently. The habit of describing spinnaker foot lengths and asymmetric tack positions in multiples of J still runs through sail design offices.

Cruising and Racing Perspectives

For the cruiser, J is mostly a number to give the sailmaker accurately. It fixes how big a furling genoa will be for a given overlap, how far aft the sheet lead track must run, and whether a code zero or asymmetric on a short sprit will clear the pulpit. Anyone adding a bowsprit, moving a headstay to a new stem fitting or converting to a self-tacking jib should measure again rather than trust the brochure figure.

For the racer, J is a rating input and a design constraint. Under ORC and IRC the declared J sets rated foretriangle and headsail area, and a J that grows because of a new stem fitting must be redeclared. Crews chasing performance under a rule often trade a smaller J for more mainsail, or add a prod for downwind sails without altering J, because the rules treat the two differently.

Frequently Asked Questions about J

Is J measured to the bow or to the headstay?

To the headstay. On most boats the headstay lands close to the stem, so the two are near enough, but on a boat with a bowsprit or a headstay set back from the stem the difference can be substantial.

What does a 150 per cent genoa mean in terms of J?

Its LP, the perpendicular distance from the clew to the luff, is one and a half times J. On a boat with a J of 4 metres the LP is 6 metres, so the clew overlaps the mast by roughly 2 metres.

J is the short side of the most important triangle on the boat. Measure it honestly, quote it correctly, and your headsails, your spinnaker gear and your rating certificate will all describe the same yacht.
