Overlap has two distinct meanings on a sailing boat, and both matter. The first is a sailmaker’s term: a headsail overlaps when its clew extends aft of the mast, so that the back of the sail lies alongside the front of the mainsail. A jib whose clew stops at or before the mast is non-overlapping; a genoa with its clew well aft of the mast is overlapping, and the amount is expressed as the sail’s luff perpendicular as a percentage of the J measurement. The second meaning belongs to the Racing Rules of Sailing: two boats overlap when neither is clear astern of the other, and that relationship decides who has rights at marks and obstructions. A beginner needs to know that the two meanings share nothing but the word. An experienced sailor adds that headsail overlap is a rating and rig-geometry decision as much as a trim one, and that overlap between boats is judged from hull and equipment in normal position, not from where a sail happens to be flying.
Headsail Overlap and the LP Measurement
The measure of a headsail’s size is its LP, the luff perpendicular: the shortest distance from the clew to the luff. Divide LP by J, the distance from the front of the mast to the headstay at deck level, and you have the overlap percentage. A working jib with LP equal to J is a 100 per cent headsail. A 110 per cent jib overlaps slightly; a 135 per cent genoa is a typical cruising furling sail; a 150 or 155 per cent genoa is the classic light-air racing headsail whose clew reaches well past the mast.
Overlap adds area without adding luff length, and area is power in light air. It also lengthens the slot, the channel between the genoa leech and the mainsail luff, whose management is much of what upwind trim is about; a big overlap demands that genoa lead and main trim be coordinated or the genoa backwinds the main. Rating rules once taxed mainsail area heavily, so older boats carried small mains and huge genoas; modern designs favour big square-top mains, swept spreaders that make an overlapping genoa impossible to sheet properly, and non-overlapping jibs that tack in a heartbeat.
Cruising and Racing Perspectives
Cruisers generally settle on a single furling genoa between 120 and 140 per cent as the best compromise between light-air performance and manageability, accepting that the sail sweeps the spreaders on every tack and sets poorly when partly rolled. Racers with an inventory carry a range: a light number one at 150 to 155 per cent, a heavier number one around 140 and a number three at roughly 100 to 110 per cent for a real breeze. On non-overlapping boats the decision is simpler and the tacks quicker, which is one reason that configuration now dominates one-design and grand-prix racing.
Overlap in the Racing Rules
In the Racing Rules of Sailing, one boat is clear astern of another when her hull and equipment in normal position are behind a line drawn abeam from the aftermost point of the other boat’s hull and equipment in normal position; the other boat is clear ahead. They overlap when neither is clear astern, and also when a boat between them overlaps both. These terms always apply to boats on the same tack; they apply to boats on opposite tacks only when the mark-room rule applies between them or when both are sailing more than 90 degrees from the true wind.
The consequences are large. A boat with an inside overlap when the first of them reaches the zone is entitled to mark-room. A boat that establishes an overlap to leeward from clear astern within two of her hull lengths must not sail above her proper course while the overlap lasts. A leeward boat with an overlap has right of way over the windward boat. Why do so few modern boats carry overlapping genoas?
Large square-top mainsails with swept-back spreaders produce power more efficiently and are easier to handle. A non-overlapping jib tacks fast, needs fewer lead positions and does not chafe on the spreaders, and rating systems have become more even-handed about mainsail area.
Does a sail count for overlap under the racing rules?
Yes, if it is in its normal position. A spinnaker flying ahead of the bow or a boom squared out over the quarter is equipment in normal position and can create an overlap. A sheet trailing in the water or a sail being lowered does not.
What overlap should my cruising genoa have?
For most cruisers, 130 to 135 per cent is the sweet spot: enough area for light air, manageable to tack and furl, and it sheets reasonably when partly rolled. If you sail in a windy area or mostly to windward, consider going smaller.
