Laminated Sail Cloth is sailcloth made by bonding a layer of oriented fibre to one or more layers of polyester film with adhesive, rather than by weaving yarns together. The division of labour is the whole point: the film controls stretch on the bias, where woven cloth is weakest, while the fibre resists stretch in the direction it is laid – warp, fill or a radial fan of load lines. A beginner should understand that this is why a laminated genoa keeps its shape as the wind builds when a Dacron sail of the same weight is already getting full and draft-aft. An experienced sailor and sailmaker will add that the choice of fibre orientation in the cloth must match the panel layout of the sail, or the whole advantage is thrown away.
The Problem Laminated Cloth Solves
Woven cloth is an interlaced grid. Pull it along the warp or the fill and the yarns take the load directly. Pull it at 45 degrees and the yarns simply scissor toward each other, so even a tightly woven, heavily resinated Dacron stretches several times more on the bias than on the thread line. Sailmakers spent decades fighting this with panel layouts that kept the leech load as close to the thread line as possible. Laminated sail cloth attacks the problem at the material level. Polyester film has essentially the same low stretch in every direction, so bonding it to the fibre layer locks the yarns in place: the fibre can no longer scissor, and bias stretch falls to a fraction of what a woven cloth allows.
How the Cloth Is Put Together
The fibre layer can be organised in several ways, and the sail designer chooses among them:
- Warp-oriented laminate: the heaviest yarns run along the length of the roll. Cut into radial panels fanning from the clew and head, the warp follows the primary leech loads. This is the most common layout for laminated genoas and mainsails.
- Fill-oriented laminate: strength runs across the roll, suited to cross-cut panel layouts where the leech is roughly perpendicular to the panel seams. Less common today but still used.
- Scrim laminate: an open, non-woven grid of yarns – often at 0 and 90 degrees with extra yarns on the diagonal – sandwiched between two films. Very light and very stable, favoured for racing headsails.
- Taffeta laminate: any of the above with a fine woven polyester skin bonded on one or both faces for chafe and UV protection, the standard for cruising laminates.
Manufacturing happens on wide presses under heat and pressure, and the cured roll is then handled much like conventional cloth, though it must be stored flat or rolled rather than folded.
Fibre Choices and What They Buy You
Polyester fibre is the entry point: modest stiffness, excellent flex life and UV resistance, and low cost. Aramids such as Kevlar®, Twaron® and Technora® are three to four times stiffer for their weight but dislike sunlight and sharp folding. Carbon is stiffer still and immune to UV, but brittle on tight creases. Dyneema® and Spectra® (UHMWPE) are tough and UV-stable but creep under sustained load, which is why they are usually blended rather than used alone. Vectran® has good creep resistance and is sometimes combined with aramid. The film is almost always PET polyester; its thickness, from half a mil to several mils, sets much of the bias stability and the weight.
Why It Matters for Trim and Speed
Because laminated cloth holds camber and draft position, the trimmer has real control. Halyard tension moves the draft where you ask; backstay flattens the main and it stays flat; the leech twists open in a puff and returns rather than hooking. On a cruising boat this shows up as less heel and less weather helm for the same speed, and as a genoa that still points after five seasons. The same stability places demands on the sailmaker: a laminated panel does not stretch to disguise a poor design, so the shape must be right when it leaves the loft.

Not quite. Laminated cloth is made in rolls and cut into panels; a membrane or load-path sail has its fibres laid to the shape of one specific sail. Both rely on film for bias control, and membrane sails are usually built on a laminated base.
Does laminated cloth need special care?
Roll or flake it loosely, keep it covered from UV, avoid flogging and stow it dry. Treated that way, a cruising laminate lasts many seasons; stuffed wet into a bag, no cloth lasts long.
