Warp has two quite separate meanings afloat, and both are in daily use. 1. In sailcloth and any woven fabric, the warp is the set of threads that run lengthwise along the roll of cloth, held under tension on the loom while the fill (or weft) threads are woven across them. 2. In seamanship, a warp is a heavy rope used for mooring, towing or anchoring, and to warp a vessel is to move her by hauling on lines rather than by sail or engine. A beginner needs to know both meanings exist so that “take a turn on the stern warp” and “this cloth is warp-oriented” are not baffling. An experienced sailmaker knows that the warp is usually the stiffer and stronger direction of a woven cloth, because its yarns are straighter, and that choosing warp- or fill-oriented cloth decides how a sail must be cut.
Warp in sailcloth
On the loom, the warp yarns are set up first, stretched taut and parallel along the length of the roll. The fill yarns are then passed over and under them across the width. Because the warp yarns are under tension during weaving, they lie relatively straight, while the fill yarns bend up and down around them; this bending is called crimp. A yarn with more crimp stretches more before it takes load, as the bends straighten out, so a plain weave with equal yarns in both directions is naturally stronger and stiffer in the warp. Weavers can reverse this by using heavier yarns in the fill and packing them tightly so that the warp yarns take the crimp instead, producing a fill-oriented cloth.
The direction that matters is decided by how the sail will be cut.

Why the warp direction matters for sail shape
Woven cloth stretches least along its threadlines and most on the bias at 45 degrees. A sail designer’s task is to align the strongest threadline with the highest loads, which run from the clew up the leech and fan out from every corner. Get the warp pointing along those loads and the sail holds its designed camber as the wind builds; get it wrong and the cloth is loaded on the bias, the draft moves aft, the leech falls off and the sail becomes deep and slow long before the fibres themselves are worn out. When a sail comes into the loft “blown out” after a few seasons, it is nearly always the bias that has gone, not the warp or fill. That is why a well-designed radial sail in a good warp-oriented cloth outlasts a crosscut sail in the same fibre, and why the panel layout and the cloth orientation must be chosen together.
Warp as a line and warping as a manoeuvre
In the seamanship sense, warps are the heavy lines that hold a boat to a quay or to another boat: bow warp, stern warp, and the springs that run diagonally to stop her surging fore and aft. A towing warp is the long line to a vessel under tow. A kedge warp is the rode of a kedge anchor, which brings us to the verb. To warp a boat is to move her by hauling on a line made fast to something fixed, a bollard, a buoy, a kedge anchor laid out by dinghy or a convenient pile. A boat with a dead engine and a foul wind can still be warped along a quay to a berth, turned in her own length with a spring and a fender, or hauled off a mud bank with a kedge.
