Pinch: Sailing Too Close to the Wind

Sail too close to wind

To pinch is to sail closer to the wind than the boat wants to go, so the sails begin to luff and the boat slows while pointing very high. The helm feels light, the inside telltales on the headsail lift and stream upward, the luff of the genoa starts to bubble, and the speed comes off before the pointing gain is worth it. Beginners pinch because they are trying to sail towards the mark; experienced sailors pinch deliberately, for a few seconds at a time, to clear a mark, feather the boat in a gust or squeeze past another boat – and they know exactly what it is costing them while they do it.

What is happening in the sails

A sail generates drive when the wind flows attached across both sides of it. Upwind the angle of attack is small and the margin is narrow. Head up a few degrees too far and the flow on the windward side of the headsail separates first, right at the luff; the windward telltales lift while the leeward ones still stream. Head up further and the luff backwinds into a visible bubble, and the mainsail follows. At that point the boat is coasting on momentum with a hull and keel dragging through the water and very little forward force to pay for it.

The physics of pinching is about lift and drag on the keel as much as on the sails. A slower boat makes more leeway because the keel needs speed to generate lift. So pinching gives you a higher heading but a lower course through the water, and the two effects often cancel or reverse: you point higher and end up further to leeward. That is why velocity made good to windward, not compass heading, is the measure that matters.

The sailmaker’s view: groove width

How easily a boat pinches depends on the shape of its sails, particularly the entry of the headsail. A genoa with a fine, flat entry has a narrow “groove”: it points high when trimmed perfectly but stalls or luffs with only a small change in angle. A fuller, rounder entry has a wide groove that tolerates pinching and footing alike, at some cost to ultimate pointing. Headstay sag also matters. A sagging headstay adds depth and rounds the entry, so a boat pinches more easily in a breeze when the stay is loaded up and sagging; tightening the backstay flattens the entry and narrows the groove. Draft position plays its part: draft too far forward gives a forgiving but slow entry, draft blown aft on an old sail gives a hard, stalling entry with a hooked leech that tricks you into pinching because the boat feels balanced only when it is sailing too high.

When to pinch on purpose

Pinching is a tool as well as a fault. There are moments when a few seconds of height is worth more than speed:

  • Clearing a mark or an obstruction: squeezing up to fetch a windward mark without a second tack is often faster than two tacks.
  • Feathering in a gust: heading up into a puff so the boat stays on her feet rather than heeling and rounding up. Done well the speed barely drops and the boat gains height for free.

Cruising and racing perspectives

Cruisers pinch most often without meaning to, usually on a long beat to a destination that is just out of reach. The cure is to accept the extra tack, sail the boat at a comfortable speed and let the autopilot or the helm steer to the telltales rather than the compass. Racers pinch for tactical reasons and pay a measured price.
