The sailmaker sees helm balance as a sail-shape problem before it is a rudder problem. A mainsail with draft too far aft, a closed leech or too much depth pushes the centre of effort aft and loads the helm; flattening it with outhaul and backstay, easing the traveller and opening the leech with twist lightens it immediately. A big genoa relative to the main moves the centre of effort forward and reduces weather helm, which is one reason a sloop reefs her main before her headsail. Mast rake is the rigger’s tool: raking the mast aft moves the whole sail plan aft and increases weather helm, standing it up reduces it. Old, stretched sails almost always add weather helm, and a boat that has grown heavy on the helm over the years often needs a new mainsail more than a new rudder.

The cruiser wants a helm light enough for the autopilot to hold without drawing heavy current and balanced enough that the boat looks after herself while a crew member goes forward. The racer wants feel: enough weather helm to sense the groove upwind, a rudder doing as little work as possible, and small, smooth movements that keep it from acting as a brake.
