A tiller is the lever attached to the head of the rudder stock by which a boat is steered. Push it to one side and the rudder swings to the other, turning the boat away from the direction you pushed. It is the oldest and simplest steering arrangement there is, and on dinghies, small keelboats and a good many cruising yachts up to about eleven metres it is still the best. A beginner needs to remember that the boat turns opposite to the tiller. An experienced sailor knows that a tiller is also the most sensitive instrument on the boat, telling you through your fingertips exactly how the sails and the hull are balanced, and that most of what a helmsman learns about trim comes through the tiller before it comes through the eyes.
How a tiller works
The rudder is a foil hung beneath the stern. Turning it presents an angle of attack to the water flowing past, which generates a sideways force at the stern and pivots the boat. The tiller is a simple lever giving the helmsman mechanical advantage over that force. Because the rudder turns with the tiller, pushing the tiller to port swings the rudder blade to starboard and the boat’s bow follows the rudder to starboard.
Most tillers are laminated wood, aluminium or carbon. A tiller extension, a hinged pole clipped to the end, lets the helmsman hike outboard while still steering, and a tiller pilot – a small electric ram between tiller and cockpit side – handles longer passages.
The tiller as a trim instrument
Here is the part that turns a beginner into a helmsman. When the sails and hull are balanced, the boat wants to sail straight and the tiller sits near the centreline with only a light, steady pressure towards leeward. That light pull is weather helm, and a few degrees of it is exactly what you want: the rudder is generating a little lift to windward, and the boat feels alive.
When the tiller is pulling hard to leeward and you are straining to hold the boat down, you have too much weather helm. The centre of effort of the sails has moved aft or the boat is heeling too far, so the hull wants to round up into the wind. The rudder is now dragging, and you are slow. The cure is in the sails, not in your arm: flatten the mainsail, ease the traveller, add twist, move the draft forward with more halyard or Cunningham, or reef. On a fractional rig, bending the mast flattens the main and reduces helm at once.
When the tiller feels dead or pushes to windward, you have lee helm. The boat wants to bear away, the rudder has to be held to leeward to keep course, and the boat is both slow and less safe because it will not round up on its own if you let go. Lee helm usually means too much headsail for the mainsail, a mast raked too far forward, or a boat sailing under headsail alone. Power up the main or reduce the headsail and the balance comes back.
Tiller versus wheel
A wheel gives more mechanical advantage, takes up less cockpit space on a big boat, and lets the helmsman stand or sit in several positions. Its cost is feedback. Between the wheel and the rudder there is a quadrant, cables or a rod linkage, and often some friction, so the fine pressure changes that a tiller hands you directly are damped or lost. Technique: steering well with a tiller
- Hold it lightly: Use fingertips, not a fist. A tight grip hides everything the tiller is trying to tell you.
- Small movements: Every degree of rudder is drag. Steer with the smallest corrections that keep the telltales flying, and let the boat find her groove.
- Use the sails first: When the helm loads up, the trimmer should be easing the main before you fight the tiller.
- Steer down the waves: Downwind in a sea, bear away as the stern lifts and come up as the bow buries. The tiller lets you feel the rudder start to lose grip before a broach.
