Trim: Adjusting Sails and Balancing the Boat

Trim has three related meanings on a sailing boat, and a good sailor uses all of them without thinking. First, to trim a sail is to adjust it: sheeting in or easing out, and shaping it with halyard, outhaul, vang, cunningham and lead position so that it draws efficiently for the wind angle. Second, trim describes the fore-and-aft attitude of the hull, whether the boat sits level, bow-down or stern-down, and by extension how crew weight and stores are distributed. Third, a boat “in trim” is simply one that is properly set up and balanced. A beginner learns that trim means pulling the sheet until the luff stops fluttering. An experienced sailor knows that sail trim and hull trim are inseparable: move the crew, and the helm changes; change the helm, and the sails need retrimming.

Sail trim: the controls and what they do

Every sail control changes one of a handful of shape variables: angle of attack, depth (camber), draft position, twist and leech tension. The sheet is the primary control for angle of attack and, on a mainsail, leech tension. The traveller or jib lead moves the sheeting angle without changing tension. Halyard and cunningham tension the luff and pull the draft forward. The outhaul flattens or deepens the lower third of the main. The vang and mainsheet control twist by holding the boom down. Backstay tension bends the mast, flattening the main, and straightens or sags the headstay, flattening or deepening the genoa. Understanding which control does what is the whole art; the rest is watching the telltales and the speedo.

  • Angle of attack: sheet and traveller. Trim until the inside luff telltales stream, ease until the outside ones lift.
  • Depth: outhaul, backstay, headstay sag and sheet lead. Deep for power in light air and chop; flat for speed and control in a breeze.
  • Draft position: halyard and cunningham. Around 40 to 45 percent aft on a main, 30 to 40 percent on a genoa, moving forward as the wind builds.
  • Twist: vang, mainsheet and jib lead fore-and-aft. More twist in light and lumpy conditions or when overpowered; less when the boat needs pointing.

Why trim matters to a sailmaker

A sail is designed with a specific flying shape in mind, and the designed shape only appears when the sail is trimmed the way the designer assumed. A low-stretch laminate or a Titanium sail with load-path tapes holds its shape across a wide range, but it still needs the correct halyard, sheet and lead to fly properly. Overtrimming a modern flat-cut sail closes the leech, stalls the flow and heels the boat without driving it; undertrimming lets the leech twist open and wastes power. When a customer tells us a sail is “too full” or “won’t point”, the first question is always how it is being trimmed, because a well-built sail that looks wrong is far more often a trim problem than a cut problem. Trim is also what preserves a sail: excessive halyard tension, a boom pinned to leeward by a vang while the sheet is eased, or a genoa sheeted hard against the spreaders all shorten a sail’s life faster than any amount of honest sailing.

Hull trim: weight, heel and helm

The second meaning of trim is how the hull sits. Fore-and-aft trim affects waterline length, transom immersion and helm balance; heel affects the shape of the immersed hull and how the rudder bites. In light air, move weight forward and to leeward to lift the transom and let gravity help the sails fill. In a breeze, move weight aft and to windward to keep the boat flat and let the bow lift on the waves. Excess heel sinks the leeward bow, lifts the transom edge and pushes the centre of effort to leeward of the centre of lateral resistance, which is why an overheeled boat rounds up with heavy weather helm. Flatten the boat by trimming sails, and the helm goes light again.

Frequently Asked Questions about Trim

How do I know when a sail is trimmed correctly?

Upwind, the luff telltales on the jib should stream evenly on both sides, the mainsail’s top leech telltale should fly most of the time, and the helm should carry a few degrees of weather helm. Off the wind, ease until the luff just curls, then trim in slightly.

What does “trim by the stern” mean?

It means the boat is sitting deeper aft than the designer intended, usually because of stores, tanks or gear in the stern. It drags the transom, adds weather helm and slows the boat in light air.

Should I trim differently in waves?

Yes. In chop you need more depth and a little more twist so the sails keep driving as the boat pitches and the apparent wind swings. Ease the outhaul, add headstay sag and move the jib lead forward slightly.
