HOW IT'S BUILT

Premium wovens with modern fibers.

Hybrid wovens blend high-tenacity polyester with UHMWPE fibers, weaving the reinforcement directly into the cloth rather than laminating it on. The result is a sail that handles like a woven — quiet, foldable, forgiving — with markedly better shape retention.

We build them in cross-cut (Voyager) or tri-radial (Hydranet, Fibercon Pro Hybrid) configurations, orienting the high-strength fibers along the primary load paths for maximum shape retention.

For offshore cruisers who want one suit of sails to cross oceans and come home again, this is usually the recommendation.

A standard Dacron sail can stay structurally sound for years, but its performance life — the window in which it holds its efficient, aerodynamic shape — is much shorter. Because Hybrid Wovens resist the permanent “creep” that plagues polyester, they significantly extend performance life over traditional woven sails.

It depends what you’re comparing them to. Because UHMWPE fibers are much stronger and lighter than polyester, we can often use a lighter base cloth to beat the strength of “heavy-duty” offshore Dacron — reducing weight aloft, which cuts heeling and pitching and helps in light air. Compared to a standard coastal Dacron sail, though, Hybrid Wovens — especially with our rugged Bluewater Finishing — will be heavier and bulkier.

They keep a “soft hand” because they’re woven, but the high-density weave makes them slightly stiffer than standard Dacron. If you’re replacing an older main, note the Hybrid Woven version may have a slightly larger stack height on the boom, so you might need a larger sail cover or cradle. They flake easily and suit boom or in-mast furling, and they grow more supple with use while holding their shape and structural integrity.

Hybrid Wovens are primarily produced in white for the highest UV resistance and material integrity over long-term offshore use. As textile technology evolves, select weights are becoming available in Grey or Black to meet the demand for a more modern aesthetic.
