Weather Helm: Why the Boat Wants to Round Up

Tendency to turn windward; measured in rudder angle degrees needed for straight course

Weather helm is a sailing boat’s tendency to turn toward the wind – to round up – when the helm is released. To hold a straight course the helmsman must keep the rudder turned slightly to leeward, and weather helm is measured by that rudder angle: a boat needing three degrees of rudder to sail straight has three degrees of weather helm. For a beginner, it is the pull you feel on the tiller as the boat heels. The experienced sailor knows that a little weather helm is a good thing: two to five degrees gives the helm feel, lets the boat look after herself in a puff, and makes the rudder generate lift that helps the keel resist leeway. Beyond that it is drag and fatigue.

The Physics: Centre of Effort and Centre of Lateral Resistance

The sail plan has a centre of effort (CE), the point where the total aerodynamic force can be considered to act. The underwater body has a centre of lateral resistance (CLR), where the hydrodynamic side force acts. If the CE sits aft of the CLR, the wind pushes the stern to leeward and the bow to windward: weather helm. Designers place the CE a little forward of the CLR on paper, because two things move it aft as soon as the boat sails. First, heel: as the boat leans, the sails’ driving force moves outboard to leeward of the centreline and acts as a lever turning the bow up. Second, the heeled hull’s asymmetry: the immersed leeward bow becomes fuller and pushes the bow to windward. The more the boat heels, the more weather helm she carries, which is why it comes on so sharply in a gust.

Measuring It

Steer a steady course close-hauled in flat water and look at the tiller or the rudder-angle indicator. A few degrees off the centreline is fine; a tiller pinned to your chest is not. A wheel-steered boat hides the load behind gearing, so use the autopilot’s rudder readout or a mark on the wheel. Another quick test: let go of the helm briefly. A balanced boat rounds up slowly; one that spins head to wind in a second is overpowered.

Causes and Cures

Because heel is the biggest driver, most of the cures are about depowering and keeping the boat on her feet:

  • Flatten the sails: tension the backstay to bend the mast and flatten the main, pull on outhaul and cunningham, and use the flattening reef if the sail has one. A flatter sail heels less.
  • Open the leech: ease the mainsheet or drop the traveller to leeward and add twist. A tight, hooked mainsail leech is a rudder in the sky, driving the bow up.
  • Move the centre of effort forward: reef the main before the headsail, or change down to a smaller main and keep the genoa.
  • Adjust mast rake: raking the mast forward moves the CE forward and reduces weather helm; raking it aft adds helm. This is a rig-tune fix for a boat that is habitually heavy.
  • Hike or shift weight: bodies on the rail reduce heel and helm together.
  • Check the sails themselves: an old, stretched mainsail with the draft blown aft is a classic cause of chronic weather helm.

Cruising Versus Racing

A cruising skipper feels weather helm through the autopilot, which works harder, draws more current and can be overwhelmed in a gust. The cruising cure is to reef early and sail flatter; a boat at fifteen degrees of heel with a balanced helm will often match one at twenty-five degrees fighting her rudder, and be far more comfortable. A racer tunes for the sweet spot – typically three to four degrees – where the rudder adds lift and the helmsman has enough feel to steer the waves.

Lee Helm: The Opposite Problem

Lee helm is the tendency to bear away when the helm is released, and it is dangerous: left alone the boat turns downwind, gybes and keeps going. It usually appears in light air on boats with the mast raked too far forward or with too much headsail and too little main. The cures are the mirror image: rake the mast aft, add mainsail area or fullness, and trim the main harder.

How much weather helm is ideal?

Most designers and sailmakers aim for two to five degrees of rudder angle close-hauled in moderate breeze. Enough to give the helm feel and make the rudder work, not so much that it becomes a brake.

Why does weather helm get worse in gusts?

A gust heels the boat, and heel moves the sails’ drive outboard and changes the immersed hull shape, both of which push the bow up.

Can a new mainsail fix chronic weather helm?

Often, yes. A stretched main with the draft aft and a tight leech is one of the most common causes. A new sail with the draft forward and a leech that opens properly can transform a boat’s balance.

Weather helm is the boat telling you how she is balanced. A whisper of it means the sails and the keel are working together; a shout means you are overpowered and it is time to flatten, twist or reef. Learn to listen to the helm and you will sail faster, flatter and with far less effort.
