Keel: The Fin That Keeps a Sailing Boat Upright and Pointing

The keel is the fixed underwater fin along the centreline of a sailing boat, and it does two jobs at once. It resists the sideways push of the sails so the boat moves forward rather than skidding to leeward, and it carries ballast low down so that the heeling force of the rig is balanced by a righting force from below. The beginner needs to know that a keel keeps the boat upright and stops it slipping sideways. The experienced sailor adds that a modern keel is a foil, not a plank, generating lift like a wing as the boat sails at a small angle of leeway, and that the relationship between the keel’s position and the sail plan’s centre of effort is what decides how the boat feels on the helm.

How a Keel Works

When a boat sails to windward the sails push her forward and sideways. The sideways component would carry her off to leeward were it not for the keel, which meets the water at a slight angle – typically three to six degrees of leeway – and generates a lift force to windward much as an aircraft wing generates lift upward. The faster the boat moves, the more lift the keel produces for the same leeway, which is why a boat that is pinching and slow makes far more leeway than one sailing a little free with speed on.

Types of Keel

  • Full or long keel: runs most of the length of the hull, often with the rudder hung on its trailing edge. Directionally steady, kind in a seaway, easy to slip, but slow to tack and with more wetted surface.
  • Fin keel: a separate, deeper, shorter foil bolted to the hull with the rudder set well aft on its own skeg or spade. Efficient upwind and quick to manoeuvre; the default on most modern boats.
  • Bulb keel: a fin with a lead bulb or torpedo at its tip, concentrating ballast low for maximum righting moment with minimum draught and wetted surface.
  • Wing keel: a fin with horizontal winglets at the tip that reduce tip losses and lower the ballast on a shallow-draught boat. Excellent in shoal waters, harder to free after grounding.
  • Bilge or twin keels: two shorter keels angled out from the hull, allowing the boat to sit upright on a drying mooring. Popular in tidal cruising grounds.
  • Lifting, swing and canting keels: keels that retract for shoal water or cant to windward for racing stability, adding complexity and cost in exchange for versatility or speed.

Why the Keel Matters to the Sailmaker

The keel sets the centre of lateral resistance, the point under water through which the boat’s resistance to sideways motion acts. The sails set the centre of effort above it. If the centre of effort sits behind the centre of lateral resistance, the boat wants to round up into the wind and carries weather helm; if it sits ahead, she falls off and carries lee helm. Designers place the mast so that the sail plan’s centre of effort sits slightly ahead of the keel’s, which in practice, after heel and sail shape are taken into account, gives a small, comfortable weather helm.

That balance is why a sailmaker asks about the boat’s helm feel before designing a new sail. A mainsail with too much depth aft, or a headsail that has lost its shape and gone full and deep, moves the centre of effort aft and adds weather helm; a flatter main, a smaller genoa or a mast raked forward brings it back. Sails built from stable laminates such as Titanium and X-Drive hold their designed centre of effort through the wind range, which is one reason a boat with fresh, stable sails feels lighter on the helm than the same boat with tired polyester. The keel does not change; the sails do, and the helm tells you.

Frequently Asked Questions about Keels

Why does my boat make more leeway when I sail slowly?

A keel is a foil and generates lift in proportion to speed. Slow down and the same sideways force from the sails needs a bigger leeway angle to be balanced, so pinching to windward without speed actually loses ground.

Can a new set of sails change how much weather helm I have?

Yes, noticeably. Sails move the centre of effort as they change shape. Fresh, flatter sails with the draft held forward reduce weather helm compared with stretched, deep ones whose draft has moved aft.

The keel is the quiet partner to the sails: the one supplies the push, the other the resistance and the balance that turn it into progress to windward. Understand what your keel does and how your sails load it, and the boat will tell you through the helm when the two are in harmony.
