Lines: Why Sailors Call Rope Line and How to Choose It

Ropes used on boats

Lines is the sailor’s word for the ropes aboard a boat once they have been put to a job. The old saying is that rope is what you buy in the chandlery and line is what it becomes when you cut it to length and give it a name – sheet, halyard, guy, painter, dock line, control line. Beginners need to learn that a request to “ease the line” gets a blank look, because every line aboard has a specific name and the name is how the crew avoids confusion under pressure. Seasoned sailors add the second lesson: the construction and material of each line are chosen for its task, and the stretchy rope that makes a fine dock line will ruin the shape of a sail if used as a halyard.

When rope becomes a line

A handful of ropes keep the word in their names – the bolt rope sewn into a sail’s luff and foot, the bell rope, the footrope on a traditional yard. Almost everything else is a line with a job title. Running rigging, the lines that move and control sails, includes halyards to hoist, sheets to trim, guys to position a spinnaker pole, and control lines such as the vang, outhaul, cunningham and reefing lines. Mooring lines, springs and the painter of a dinghy hold the boat to something else; the anchor rode runs between anchor and boat, and a warp is a heavy line for towing, kedging or hauling. Knowing the names is not pedantry; it is what lets a helmsman call for “the lazy sheet” and get exactly that.

What modern lines are made of

Most lines are built as a load-carrying core inside a braided cover that protects it and gives grip in a hand, a cleat or a winch. Polyester, sold as Dacron among other names, is the workhorse: modest stretch, good UV and abrasion resistance, pleasant to handle. Nylon stretches a great deal, which makes it wrong for anything controlling a sail but perfect for dock lines and anchor rodes, where it absorbs shock loads. Polypropylene floats and is cheap, which is why it turns up in dinghy painters and rescue lines, but it degrades quickly in sunlight.

High-modulus fibres transformed running rigging. HMPE, sold as Dyneema® and Spectra®, has strength comparable to steel wire at a fraction of the weight and stretches very little, so a Dyneema-cored halyard holds a luff at the tension the sailmaker designed for. Vectran® and aramids such as Kevlar® offer similar low stretch with better creep resistance but poorer UV tolerance, so they live under a polyester cover. Sailmakers care about this: a sail built with a low-stretch load path, whether a Tape-Drive® genoa or a Titanium™ mainsail, is only as good as the halyard and sheets that hold its corners in place.

Choosing the right line for the job

  • Halyards: low stretch above all. A halyard that creeps lets the draft move aft in a gust, exactly when you want the sail flat and forward. Dyneema core with a polyester cover is the standard.
  • Sheets: moderate stretch is acceptable and a soft, grippy cover matters more, because sheets are handled constantly. Polyester double braid suits most cruisers; racers use a blended core to save weight on a long mainsheet or spinnaker sheet.
  • Control lines: small diameter, low stretch, colour-coded so that the vang cannot be mistaken for the outhaul in the dark.
  • Dock and anchor lines: nylon three-strand or braid for stretch, generously sized, with chafe protection wherever they pass a fairlead.
  • Diameter: size a sheet for comfort in the hand and for its winch rather than for pure strength; thin rope hurts.

Cruising vs racing

A cruiser wants lines that last for years, are kind on hands and can be spliced or whipped with basic skills: polyester everywhere except halyards, nylon for mooring. The racer sees lines as part of the rig’s stiffness budget and as weight to be shaved – stripped covers on spinnaker sheets, tapered halyards, soft shackles instead of metal, and sheets replaced when they get stiff rather than when they break. Both agree that a line should run freely, hold when cleated and never be allowed to chafe, because a line rarely fails in the middle; it fails where it rubs.
